I just purchased a 02 suburban 2500 with the 8.1L and just got back from a short 60 mile test drive with the trailer hooked up and so far I think this was a great change from my 1/2 ton Silverado. Did manage to stop by the grain scale and trailer weighed in at about 6200 lbs.
Also another great feature is the lift gate on the suburban clears my electric tongue jack, couldn't drop the pick up tailgate before.
It was a very smooth ride with plenty of power, my 5.3L did alright on the flats but really struggled to pull up a hill. Was able to use the cruise with the suburban never could with the pickup (it was always looking for a gear).
The suburban also has a great ride while not towing which for a 3/4 ton vehicle is almost unheard of they ride like old farm wagons unless hauling a load.
The search for the suburban was a bit daunting though. Its a tough find, there are plenty out there but you will find that they are really beat up or have 200k+ miles on them.
Can't hardly wait for a real camping trip but will have to wait till 4th of July for a real test but so far everything seems great.
