Of the current year models I'd lean towards the Super Duty if gas or the Ram if diesel. The Ford seems to have the best combo of power and transmission in the gas trucks, and I don't think you can beat the Cummins in terms of long term simplicity and reliability among the diesels and I prefer the way it operates compared to the higher revving V8 diesels. The reality is all of the big three heavy duty trucks, gas or diesel, are great trucks that would serve you well. Huge step up in capability and components for little or no additional expense compared to half tons.
FWIW we are a family of five and the crew cab Ram fits us really well. The only compromise is putting the dog in a kennel out back unless it's really hot or cold, in which case we make room for her on the front center seat (our Ram has the front bench option). The back seat is an easy fit for three adults let alone kids. If you want more space you could also look at a Mega Cab.
