Switched to 17s...love it!

My truck came with factory chromed steel 16s but since I bought it used the wheels didn't quite match and it's always bugged me. I lucked into a good deal on a set of factory Chevy alloy 17s so I jumped.

So I went from 235/85/16 to 285/70/17, which have almost exactly the same height, and wow what a difference it made in ride quality and handling! Truck doesn't feel like its bouncing along on balloons anymore!

I finally got to tow the TH with them on and its the same deal, truck feels more planted and handles so much nicer.

I'm sure it has to do with the shorter sidewall. If you have the chance...do it!
  • One of the best 2nd gen RAM mods is getting rid of the 16's and buying a set of 17's from a 3rd or 4th gen RAM.

Bought a set off a 2010 with 70% tread left, BFG's with aluminum wheels for $500 then sold the stock steel wheels and tires with about 5K tire life left for $175. Rides great looks good and $325 for 50k worth of miles. Not too bad!
  • Glad that worked out for you.

I did a similar swap on my Expy. Went to 18s from 17s and also to real LT tires. Also tossed on swaybars and fresh bilsteins.

Enjoy the new wheels and tow safe.

It's really amazing how cheaply you can get brand new factory take offs as people change to custom wheels...
