Synthetic oil

I have a 2005 Dodge 1500. 5.7L Hemi. It has 73000 miles on it. I have kept the oil changes and maint. Very current. I am thinking of changing to a synthetic oil for my next oil change. Is it worth the extra cost from now on? Thanks for the info.

  • The other thing that makes 3K mile changes out of date is the modern EFI and ign. systems. Because of these there is much less oil dilution and dirt.

Thanks all. Regular oil every 3000 miles.

That's one myth that was put to rest long ago. Every 3k was something we did in the '70s when you had like 1/4 in tolerances in your engine. But things are so tight now that 5k - 7k miles is normal for changes with dino based oil. People on auto forums have paid lots of money (so I don't have to!) to have their oil tested when the vehicle's OLM says to change it. I've never read where someone said that after 5k miles their oil was shot. To the contrary, the testing services always tell them they have several thousand miles of life left in their oil.

Of course it's your money, if you want to give more to the oil companies that's your prerogative.
  • No. You have had 73,000 miles of good service, why change now?
  • JMHO, but I say no.

If you live where it gets really cold (-40*), or tow in extremely hot conditions, then it might be worth it. But in So Cal - just use regular oil and keep changing it when you should.
  • Might be worth it if your going to keep it for many hundreds of thousands of miles.
Otherwise you will find it makes no difference to the way it runs or its fuel efficiency.
  • This is an ongoing debate. I have been to the end of the internet and back reading and researching.

I have always used synthetic oil....Why? It makes we feel better.

Whether or not it is "better" I have no idea.

I'll leave all facts and details up to the the petrol-chemical engineers here on the Forum.
