I don't know how long this will last, butt,We have a lot of folks on here who are into minimalist truck camping. They (and I have been in the past) weigh every aspect, literally of what we put on the back of the truck. I used to scrape the labels off wine bottles and pull and cut the cork in half to save weight. Everything must have multiple uses. Oh, to have a full, if tiny wet bath or tough it out with a cassette and sun shower bag. Maybe even no cassette. We have a bivvy tent we erect when way out there to use the outdoor shower, outside with the wand thru a slot, in-essence, pop tent bivvy. No floor. No windows. Three walls and a door flap. While Jeeping the Rubicon a few years ago, all were impacted by the solid waste of the campers along the way. It has gotten way out of hand. So we put together a Rubicon survival biffy: an unmarked, one gallon paint can we casually call the ass-can. Boy Scouts are the extreme example of being minimalist campers and leave no footprints behind traveling through Philmont Ranch in NM. It may of been the times or place, but I learned more about camping and survival with 9 years of scouting than I did in over 20 years of active duty service in the Army.

Don't forget to put the lid down.On jobsites in a fix, we've used a 5 gallon bucket a heavy gauge trash bag and kitty litter then just toss in garbage.

I know what you mean by the solid waste problem in high traffic areas. I can imagine how the problem escalates with distance from 'civilization'. Great idea with the paint cans! Sure wish the Rubicon Trail was closer to Oklahoma! It's still on my list though!

The Germans where detected in the desert sands of Africa by flies. Seems the German troops went anyplace they pleased, without burying their human waste. The flies find this and replicate, you can see it from the airplanes.The English troops, and same with the Americans where smart enough to bury the human waste, not only controlling the fly population, but also not being detected by the Germans during WW2. So Gross. Make sure that you bury all human waste. It can communicate deise if the flies get to it, and transfer all kinds of bad stuff to the local population of deer and bears.You are in a off road vehicle, no need to cut wine corks in half, a couple of pounds for a shovel is really no big deal. You are not backpacking.Fred.

Sorry, but I don't remember exactly where it was either. It was during my climbing days so I was about 19 or 20 at the time. But after a lifetime of trips, they do tend to blend together. However, I will dig though old pictures (slides) and maps, and check with a buddy, to see if I can figure it out.
Presently working on reducing my summer (don't do winter backcountry overnights anymore if I can help it) pack weight to the mid-20's. If this interests you send me a PM and we can take the backpacking (or rafting) off this thread....although I do use my trailer as a basecamp for rafting, canoeing and backpacking trips so I guess it still (sort of) qualifies.

SteveAE, thanks for the reminder. I do watch him carefully but he is more interested in rolling in salmon most of the time. Makes the ride home gross if I can't control him. Carry lots of towels in the truck and boat.

Do you remember the name of that hut and pass, long time ago in a past life. One of your former mayors in Bend was my boss in those days.

Off topic and you probably know this already, but will share just in case it helps someone else. Watch your pup with those dead Salmon. Our Aussie got real sick on a Main (Salmon) trip from eating dead White Fish (I think Salmon can be real bad) Forcing Hydrogen Peroxide to induce vomiting seems to the fix when you are many miles from a vet.

BTW, I think I remember that same hut from a winter XC trip in the late 70's. Cold yes, but sure beats a bivy in a storm.

On the very last day! LOL! When I back packed, last day was burn day and I burned every stitch of clothing that wasn't on my body so I could go out as light as possible. When I packed for the trip, I'd just look for everything I was willing to send to Goodwill.

Hey roony77 I do understand crohn's, been dealing with it for over 40 years and two resections. This time last year I was wondering if I would see summer.

Any way I digress, the subject is poo in the wilderness. In the early 70's a friend and I skied a good part of the John Muir Trail. I don't remember the name of the pass but at the top there is a stone hut and we spent the night there. The place was a mine field all around the hut. It was from the summer and fall hikers. We went a long way out to get clean snow for melting to water. The top of that pass had little snow due to the wind otherwise we would have never have known and gathered snow close in. And that hut of granite, coldest place I ever slept in the mountains, a tomb.
