Ed, I have a 94 YJ with a 5.9 Magnum from a Ram in it. Lifted a little bit on 33" tires, ARB lockers. I sold my car hauler and am looking for a good used tow dolly, which hasn't been an easy feat. I've tried to flat tow it and it's ok, but I don't like it not having braking ability like that and I'm not interested in the expense of those tow bar braking systems. A dolly makes it more stable and it's a lot easier. I'm young enough that I have no problem unhooking the rear driveshaft when it's on a dolly.
I flat tow and use the BrakeBuddy system. It works well for me. As you know flat tow will add very little weight to the rear. I do use the heavy Blue-Ox tow bar along with a 4 inch riser to keep the tow bar even or below horizontal. I have an '06 TJ on 33" tires.
That V8 must sound pretty nice on the trail.
