Mike,
Without getting into the whole 2WD vs. 4WD debate, I am just curious as to often and under what circumstances you needed 4WD to get out of a jam? Most people use 4WD to NOT get stuck but often admit they weren't sure they needed it at all.
Honestly we have never used 4 wheel drive to get OUT of a jam but I'm sure it has prevented us from getting into one in the first place. The best reason for 4 wheel drive while carrying a camper off road is the transfer case low range. It allows us to comfortably creep along the really rough roads at low speed.
Back in the 70s I had an F-250 2 wheel drive but went some crazy places with it because it had limited slip and creeper gear. I don't think anything is made with a granny gear anymore, or a manual transmission for that matter, because most people don't use trucks for their intended purpose. Most pickups on the road today have never been off the pavement or carried anything heaver than a few sacks of groceries.
