I have lived in Southern Arizona for 40+ years, and my experience is 180 degrees different -- I have tinted the windows in our vehicles for most of that time, and I have found consistently that the interior temperature is lower in the summer once I have tint applied to the side and rear windows. And when driving in the vehicle in summer, you can feel that the heat on your body from the sun is considerably lower with tinting as opposed to before having tint applied.
The quality tint materials also block UV, which protects your upholstery and in the case of RV's, curtains, furniture, cabinets, and flooring from sun damage.
Exactly. Lots of people who don't live in AZ, NM, TX, NV etc have no idea how much tint helps.
And yes there are tints that are just different shades of dark, and there are those that are radiant heat barriers. Some do more of one than another, but most do a little of both and it helps huge!
