Tesla Launch of Pick-Up

Elon Musk, mentioned that Tesla is ready to launch a "kick-ass" pick up next year.

My son works at Tesla and this is just a confirmation of what he told me in secret a few months ago that their lab was reverse-engineering several full size pick ups.

What do you think?

Keep it civil but let the fire works begin.

I think it's pretty cool. It's certainly the future but I'm not sure it survives in the present. Tesla's "Car for everyone" is in the 60K area so hardly for everyone right now. A Pickup truck probably will be 80K or more. Most people that pull campers can't afford an 80K toy. I applaud the vision. I just don't think it's ready to be seen in everyone's driveway yet.

A basic no frills medium range Tesla model 3 is 47000 USD plus tax. Configurable and available now on their website. 60,000 gets you into long range, upgrade rims, colours, All wheel drive etc.

Yes, you're right Reisender. I used the 60K amount based on what I saw on the 60 minutes interview that was on recently. Not many everyday people want a no frills car. They want it nicely outfitted. Without going crazy with accessories, they're 60K. At least that's what I took away from the interview.

The only interior offered at this point is the premium and it is very nice. The only options are a second motor, paint color and Autopilot. The colors can add $2k and autopilot is $5k. The base price is $46k.

  • 2-300 miles? Lol
    Nice vehicles for city commuters.
Again, applaud the effort. Pushin gthe limits of technology is great and is what has us in the best vehicles in history currently for power/safety/creature comforts.
But until there is an across the board infrastructure upgrade to inductive charging on all major highways, long range electric only vehicles are a fart in the wind or only for those that don’t drive long distances.

(There’s plenty of those people though. Old folks and city slickers are numerous.)

Could be cool. Not so much for towing a camper though. Especially since there is no infrastructure at CGs to re-charge with. Most likely these are going to be far more expensive than a well decked out 1500/150 series.

Actually, camp grounds (well, RV parks, if we are getting technical) are the most well equipped places to recharge an EV outside of Cracker Barrell or a Nissan dealership.

Those 30 and 50 amp sites make it easy. Depending on the Range whilst towing with the Tesla it may be way more than doable. It may revolutionize things for a lot of folks.

I know I know there will be people who hold out because they just see themselves plugging in... it ain’t a real truck kinda crowd.

The. Again, there are people who still only drive gassers because Diesel may not be available....so...

IF Tesla can give us a truck with 200-300 miles of range before needing a charge while towing then this is possible....very possible.

    Thanks and JMHO

  • In as much as a new Tesla SUV costs upwards of 130 grand optioned out (my cousin has one), don't see a Tesla pickup as being a viable alternative except for the rich. I'm not. Sounds like an expensive grocery getter for the rich kids. Not a viable vehicle for the average Joe.
