- Houston_RemodelExplorerThe folks at my local DMV office wouldn't let me register my single axle box trailer without inspection. For some reason two of my 5 veehickles came up in different counties so I had to go into the DMV to correct the error and get the true county listed on the registration form. The Texas website wouldn't let me change it. Next time I'll do it by mail and skip the inspection.

The same is true in Tennessee, though you do have the option of getting an annual renewal plate. For the annual renewal plate the charge is around $30. For the permanent SEMI plate, $105. So the SEMI pays for itself in just over three years time.
No, not in all states. We buy one plate and it is good as long as we own the trailer. - BB_TXNomadWhen I bought my 5er new in 2007 it had an inspection sticker on the window the dealer had done. But I never had it reinspected until this year when I had to to get new registration.
- twxsby89ExplorerDealer just told me it was already inspected. My plates are ready for pickup.
I guess when bought new, it's included.
Thanks for all the replies! - BonefishExplorerAnything over 4500 lbs. has to be inspected. Our friends had gotten pulled over for not having a race car trailer inspected in TX. Now with us having 1 tag it has to be done at the time you get tags for the trailer.

Inspection is for ALL trailers, including my little 10 foot single axle box trailer. Granted the inspection was $7.
With no brakes, they checked all the lights and made sure the hitch was correct.
I did not have to get my 8' single axle 1,500 lb rated utility trailer inspected to register it this year. - Bigbird65Explorer

Go to this page and select Trailers or Mobile Homes. It says that the criteria is Exceeding 4500 pounds Actual Gross Weight. - BB_TXNomad

Do you get a sticker, like in the truck? My dealer never mentioned this. Could this have been done before I took possession, how would I know?
No sticker. They do give a sheet of paper showing the inspection was done. And it is registered with the state so that they can look it up on their computers when you apply for new registration. - Opie431ExplorerNo, not in all states. We buy one plate and it is good as long as we own the trailer.
- 2112Explorer IIThey were issuing stickers but now it's part of the registration, just like your truck. No more inspection stickers on vehicles.
I have a single axle 3000# utility trailer without brakes that does not require inspection. I have a dual axle 7000# utility trailer with brakes that does. I do not know where the line is drawn.
