No you do not have to come back. You certify that the vehicle is out of state when you renew online, by mail, or in person. You just have to get the trailer inspected within 3 days of returning to Texas. They'll issue you a new sticker, but your registration will be flagged in the system stating that an inspection is still due.

If you never return to Texas then you'd never need to do an inspection. But if you have returned, haven't done the inspection, and get pulled over then the officer can issue you a citation for the inspection infraction.

Texas has required inspections for trailers over 4,500# for years. But it was not enforced and probably most did not do it. Many did not even know about it. But last year they tied registration to having a current valid inspection. No inspection, no registration. Don't know how that affects those you mention.

I took our camper in December. Guess I found the right place. He asked me from his computer, do the lights and brakes work, I said yes sir, he said then good enough for me and did all the paperwork and handed me the passed inspection paperwork. The main thing for me was just finding a place that I could get in and out as I know everything was up to snuff. Most inspection places around here I could hardly in much less get turned around an get out.

The whole thing seems invasive to me. I'm glad we don't have anything like that in Idaho.

I had mine inspected and they drove it around and hit the breaks...so be careful. We weren't expecting the driving and a few things fell when they applied the breaks hard!!

Just had my 1988 Air Stream inspected for the first time. Just make sure all lights are working, had me set the brakes to check them, and they wanted to see fire extinguisher.
