one question I do have however for some electrical guru, is there any accumulative damage from many repeated "incidents"?

I'm not an electrical guru and I don't even play one on TV, but I have read a lot about surge protectors and it appears to me that they do "wear out" from repeated hits, and even more important is the magnitude of the hit. I've had surge protectors here at the house that "died" after doing their job.
I was not talking about damage to the surge protector. if it is hurt that is part of the game plan. I am referring to not having a multi-function surge protector and over the years have minor spikes, low voltages, etc. that are ignored and if the damage can be accumulated to the expensive equipment.
sort of like those who tow a untowable 4 down car and instead of the transmission lasting 200,000 miles trouble free, goes bad at 100,000 just after you trade it off.

Got it!
I have no doubt that there is accumulative damage to the appliances, A/C or whatever is turned on at the time. Not being an EE, I can't prove it, but just think, if it will eventually wear out a surge protector, it must be much worse on appliances not designed for surges.
