I am still waiting to see official data on the failure rate per million of "P", "ST" and "LT". I suspect they are similar.
The reason LT are not widely advertised to use with TTs, is because STs, though not tested to the same robust requirements of an LT; are designed with stiffer side walls, lower rolling resistance and greater UV resistance.
None of these feature make for a good Light Truck tire hence the "trailer service" warning on STs. Nor do they rule out the use of LTs for trailer use if one so chooses.
In the end, as already stated, all of this is a moot point if the manufacturer is cutting corners on tire quality.
Buy what makes you happy, it is your money.
Other information
I suspect the % of passenger cars with an overloaded tire to be 5 - 10%
The % of pickups to also be 5% to 10% The above is based on studies done by DOT. The advent of TPMS has lowered the % of underinflated tired from 20-30 down to the above as I understand it.
but based on data of some 30,000+ RVs that have had tire loads measured by RVSEF, not guessed about the % that are overloaded is greater than 55%.
So do you still wonder why tires that are only used on RV trailers have high failure rate? and if 80+% of tires used on RV trailers come from Chine why are you surprised at the high failure rate of ST tires made in China?
I could just as easily say workers in Indiana are not good because the complaints about RVs on this and most other RV forums are almost all about RVs built in Indiana.
X2...you make some very good and salient points that go right to the heart of this entire matter.
In addition what rpbu may not realize is that the failure rate for all types of tires is so numerically low that it is truly mathematically insignificant.
And to your point the NHTSA has stated time and again the NUMBER ONE reason for tire failure across the board is UNDERINFLATION. NOT Country of ORIGIN.
