I don't know where anyone would get that the RAM gets 12 mpg. It got 8.5 mpg pulling a 19,000# trailer (~28,000# GCW) up and down mountain grades in the last test. For the record, the Ford diesel got 9.5 mpg for the same test, the GMC, 9.1 mpg.
Let me tell you that I get 12 mpg towing regularly, but I don't tow in the same parts that you do. My gcvw is 19k+/-, because it varies with the trip we are on, but no more than the max of 20k rating of my truck. JMHO.
The info I posted was from a magazine test of the 2011.5 800tq 6.7L, 2012 GMC, and 2012 Ford 6.7L in DRW trucks. With my SRW 3500 5.9L Cummins, I can get well over 20 US mpg empty hwy, and 10-12 mpg (almost always 11 something) towing my 5er.
