I drive a diesel because I like and know how to work on them. Yes millage is better, but parts, fuel, oil changes, etc are much much more than gas vehicles. I can't stand people who own diesels and pretend that they know everything about them...
I agree that more (available) hp doesn't equal less mpg. It's the hp you're actually using that causes the fuel consumption.
My twist on that would be that when I had an under powered gasser, I was always deep into the peddle to get my truck and load going. When I added power to that truck, I got better mileage because I wasn't having to floor it all the time to get or keep things moving.
