The Story That Won't Go Away

FCA-GM

The automotive media has really latched onto this story.
  • Jeep, minivan ,ram trucks will live on ....the rest who knows.

No poison pill is now available to GM (too late) and bankers with any ties to GM or FCA are officialy muzzled until the SEC says the bid is over.
    So everything is speculation.
I can believe this would be a good fit for either ,Marchione should look for a asian partner.
  • I have no dog in this fight. Just waiting for all the fanboys to show up for entertainment value.

Eventually GM will be crawling back to FCA and begging for help. And then it will probably be at half of the original offer!

Why? What does GM need them for? GM is doing well. Just look at the sales numbers. Drive one or two of their cars and trucks. The sole reason it's stock is where it is has to do with trust, which a large segment of the public doesn't, your post illustrates that well. GM isn't the same company it was 20 years ago. Heck it isn't the same company it was 5 years ago. Not too long ago a Cadillac would not be mentioned in the same article as BMW or Mercedes. Now they are making better cars than BMW (read up on the ATS). But the general public just doesn't get that yet. Most BMW owners are afraid to admit in public that their favorite brand is often bested by what used to be known as "The standard of the world".

Unfortunately perception is reality, and I don't care who owns or partners with them, it's going to take years for GM to regain the reputation they once enjoyed in their heyday.
  • The latest JD Power vehicle quality ratings had several GM makes above average. Fiat, of course, was the worst rated manufacturer. But it did help Chrysler, since they were third from the bottom instead of next to the bottom, which would have been the case had there been no Fiat. And Fiat was last by a pretty substantial margin, so nobody needs to be too concerned with Fiat Passing them anytime soon. I guess if GM wants to treat Fiat like real estate, it would be a good deal, since many real estate investors look to buy the worst property on the block and Fiat sure qualifies.
  • Ah ... automotive mergers and hostile take overs! Oh yea! Reminds me of a story I've never forgotten.

MANY years ago now, Cheverolet and Toyota were in serious efforts to create a merger. They planned on making the "mega car", the car to beat all cars! The super-dupper car. And all it took was the merger between the 2 companies to make it happen. A marriage made in heaven .... until ...

At one of the combined board meetings where they were hammering out details for the merger and the name of the new car, a combination of the Corvette and the Corolla. When the name of the new car was finally presented ... the deal was off. It never happened.

What was the name of that new super-duper, cure all automobile ... why it was the Toy-Let! (I don't know if this is a true story, but I still chuckle every time of think of it!)

  • Chrysler has always been a failure no matter who the owners. Time to just let them go the way of all the other defunct brands. They will not be missed.

Methinks Sergio realized what a turd he bought (like Daimler and Cereberus hefore him). and wants out.
