On 081913 while driving down a county two lane road the killer attacked me, It was a female also the odd thing she did not ask for money or anything after doing seriously bodily harm to me. Seriously it was a deer came through the windshield and decided to beat me up my eye sockets were broken my nose was broke and a blood henotoma on my left hip the hospital nurse said it looked like the hip bone was protruding out the side of my hip iI asked if it were blood could it be drained the reply was it will dissipate it you drew a axsis line it is about twelve inches on each side and sticks out about three inches once it starts dissapiating from my toe to my stomach will be black wet or dry blood being moved around i guess it will take a long time to break the blood down and get them out your body. when the deer came through the windshield there were shards of glass broken debris It immediately broke my nose and broke and cracked my eye sockets my eyes are almost completely swollen shut now and a bad back injury. As soon as the truck is fixed and the docs do not tie me up physically I will be on the road I hope around the first of october 2013 hope to attend the Florida rally and then head out west in the camper thank goodness the camper was not on the truck when this happened Good Luck All and Happy Motoring

Owwwwww!!! :( So sorry about your accident. Glad it wasn't worse!(I'd guess it was somewhat worse for the deer - at least the outcome.)

They have been crashing into cars since the 1930's. It is becomeing more common too!I hope you heal up soon, and get back to camping and more important things in life. The vehicle can be replaced.Fred.

The government agency I worked for had them put on all our vehicles back in the late 1980's.

Seems there were too many vehicle-deer accidents, so they tried these.

They worked fine, but for just a short time as they all ended up plugged with bugs from driving after dark. And of course, once plugged they didn't work at all.

Best advice and preventive measure is to slow down after dark, and helps to have a fellow passenger acting as second lookout for deer.

Not only are the deer a problem here on hwy1
but the pigs are every where I've seen 5 on the side
on the road in the last week what a mess hate
to see what the cars look like

I've recently relocated to Deer Country and see them quite often. I have always had a level of paranoia of wildlife if I'm on the road in the evening, so I try to avoid traveling with my truck/camper/cargo trailer in the later evening hours, prior to sunset.

Does anyone have an experience with "deer whistles"? I've wondered how effective they are.

When I was on my 7600 mile cross country trip last year, I did a lot of driving after it got dark. I'm sure that at least 8 times I drove 250 to 350 miles at night, I was mainly keeping my eyes out for potential roadkill, sorry to hear about your accident with a deer. I'm wishing a quick and speedy recovery, I'm just glad it wasn't worse.

Good recovery to you. Your stream-of-consciousness description left me hanging up there. You just never know when the fickle finger of fate will frown upon you.
I have read of some horrific auto/deer encounters, and this one is right up there.
This time of year they are the heaviest.
A deer is one thing.
An adult Elk is yet another ratchet up in the pain threshold. I hit an elk on Hwy. 50 going through Nevada about 9 PM on the two lane road. It was grazing on the grass at the road's edge so I put the brakes on about half-panic and moved into the oncoming lane (no one oncoming) when the large animal bolted across the highway to the side I was on and we collided going about 15mph and 35 mph. Even with a 10,000 pound TC it was quite a jolt. The bovine bounced off my Warn Winch carrier and glanced against the fender changing the course of the truck slightly and the look of the fender and direction of the headlight. Following that encounter more thick wall 4340 steel tubing was added to the front bumper.
Jeanie's winter Jeep XJ has a front bumper guard as she is a deer magnet when going to town. Her new Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited needs to have a similar bumper installed.
Tis the season. Right now.

moose isnt as dangerous,imo,they move very slow,and are easy to avoid,
IF you dont drive way too fast,deer run fast and and can jump out of the bushes so fast its hard to react in time,,
Only way to be safe is to drive SLOWER ..and pay attention to the road at all times!

I was thinking the same thing. Elk have been reintroduced to the TN-KY-NC area. Glad to see them back but if they get to being as numerous as deer around here we'll be hearing even more stories like yours.

Here is wishing you a speedy recovery and a wonderful time in Florida at the rally I think they are still having.
I recently almost had an encounter with a deer and decided to put a Ranch Hand grill guard to help just in case I do hit one.

I wish you a speedy recovery. Good thing you didn't hit an elk. Many folks don't realize how much damage a deer can do. An elk and a moose cause many fatalities a year because they are so high that it is common for them to go through the windshield.
