Similar to you I haven't noted a major difference in temp by sliding the device - however when set to "cold" my freezer usually stays around zero while my fridge stays around 34. Not sure but I think it's the elevation of the bulb that is suppose to control the temp - whether it's inside or outside the holder probably doesn't matter in the long run. I purchased a fan on ebay that attaches to the fins inside the fridge - eliminated frost issues on the fins and made a nice difference in keeping fridge consistently cold.
