thinking about getting rid of bunkhouse

so I have a Salem 29QBDS. its got the huge bunk room for the kids in the back, however I have an 8 and 11 year old and they Don't Use it. they are never back there except to sleep and sometimes they crash in the main area anyways. Furthermore we hate the living area of this trailer there is no comfortable seating and the build quality has been subpar. I was at the dealership today and we looked at a couple of rear lounge trailers. we found one we really liked in the Springdale 311RE. It has so much living space, and a real shower, a pantry (ours does not) and so much storage and a central vacuum. my wife thinks the kids will be fine on the hide-a sofa- and more comfortable too as the bunkhouse just has a thin foam mat. I agree but something just strikes me wierd about getting rid of the bunkhouse. I do have it sold to a co worker if I pull the trigger by next wednesday (he wants it for the 4th, and will buy a different one from the dealer if I don't sell) for a less than $2,000 loss over what I paid for it 4 years ago so I feel thats reasonable depreciation to absorb but am I crazy for getting rid of the bunks?

Agree. I'd do that and if and when the kids want their own space then put the bunks back.
  • Why not try making up the sofa and table into a bed for a few nights? Have the kids do most of the work. And when you want to sit at the table and eat breakfast in the morning, have the kids get up and put away their bedding. That bunk room is going to seem very nice to them.
  • Sell it.... We decided against a bunkhouse when we first started rving and have never looked back. Our teens have no issue with pulling out couch to a bed and we all enjoy the extra family space. If the kids want privacy go outside and enjoy nature.

I agree that you should have what you want and what works for ya. But that $2000 isn't the only hit you'll take if the current one is paid off or paid mostly off. Or if the new one raises a monthly payment significantly.

    Just another thought

It sounds like you don't like what you have so I'd take the waiting sale. Not sure if I'd replace it with something that has the kids sleeping on a Hide a bed though. Kids get older and want their own space. Once mine hit being a teenager she really wanted her one bed and as she got older and adult sized, her back can't take a hide a bed. So I'd go pick out something new with bunks. :)

I agree with Silver Escape. As kids get older they like to have their own space even if it is a small bunk. just my opinion though:)

  • If it doesn't work for your family anymore sell it and move on. Our kids on the other hand love having there own space so we'll keep ours until youngest DS is gone. If things change in the meantime and it no longer worked for us it would go down the road too.
  • With only two kids, there's not much of a need for a bunkhouse, unless they're bringing along friends frequently. We're probably also upgrading from a Salem to a Springdale - but I want the bunkhouse because we have 3 kids.

If the bunkhouse isn't what works best for you, get rid of it.
  • If it's not working and you have a chance to sell with very little loss I would have completed the deal already. It sounds like you have already found a replacement trailer. It's your decision regardless of what anyone thinks.
