This may be true, but it still does not excuse the ignorance of the salesperson. Research or not, you should still be able to get a reasonable answer if you ask a reasonable question. The salesperson might not necessarily be able to quote chapter and verse, but they should have a pretty good general idea of what is going on.
...or at least say, "You know, I'm not sure. Let's go inside and I'll look it up for you and find out."
