thoughts on 2008 Chev 2500HD

Been looking for awhile and found an '08 2500HD Siverado. LT trim, Gas 6.0L, 6 spd trans, 4.10 rear end. Tow package. It has 88,000kms (54,000 miles) and they are asking $23,900 Canadian.

Basically this truck ticks most of the boxes for what I am looking for. The mileage is a tad high, but that is based purely on my unscientific gut instinct.

It's missing a bedliner and a backup sensor, both of which I can add. It needs front tires too.

I test drove it and it feels good, but I am comparing it to 3500/F-350's that I drove years ago. It def doesn't drive as nice as my '04 Expedition but I didn't expect it to either.

Any red flags with this model year and engine/tranny combo?

Thanks!

GM's 6.0L has been very reliable for the last 15 years! It's power is a little low by 2014, but it still performs very well. Coming from a 5.4L/4-spd to a 6.0L/6-spd will be awesome when towing. GM's 6-spd has also been reliable since 2007.5 introduction. I'm not sure why Zogg had that kind of experience, but I get about 8mpg towing my TT at 70mph, 10mpg at 60.

Also, GM sells about 45% of HD pickups with the 6.0L, compared to Ford at 25% and Ram at 15%. Why? Fleet sales/work truck reliability.

  • If the rig you have is all you will be pulling with it, then you have a great choice. I am not putting down the truck...let me explain. If you ever want to trade campers up to a 5th wheel, then you might want to consider a 3500 due to the payload runs out quickly on the 250/2500s. In the truck you are looking at, it has the rear gears I would want, however look at the option list on the truck(should be on the inside of glovebox) and look for the code G80. This is the factory rear locking differential. Very handy in trucks that pull campers. Look at the coolant. Is it the color it is supposed to be. Also pay attention to the coolant reservoir and make sure it has no turned that nasty dark color. Both indicative of a truck that has been ran hot. I too, do not think that is high mileage for that year model truck. Sounds like a great tow vehicle. Good luck.
  • I will probably get slammed for this, but here it goes....

I had a 2007 Silverado Hd 2500 with the 6.0 and 4 speed. Traded for a 2010 GMC Hd2500 with the six speed....everyone said I would get better mpg with the newer truck. I did....went from 6.9 all the way to 7.2 when towing....wow!

I really thought I liked the GM products when I owned them, but last March I pulled my son's camper with his hemi....what a difference. I was so impressed, I bought a new 2013 Ram Hemi in May.....happy I did it.

Mileage towing is 9.6 to 10.2, ride is smoother by a bunch, truck seems more solid, and the 6 speed is a lot more responsive and does not down shift wildly as the GMC did.

Not saying thatbGM doesmnot make a good truck and I was a GM owner for a long time....just noting that you might want to look around at what the other manufacturers have put together.

I drove a couple of F250s and did not like the ride and the 6.2 did not seem to have enough power....maybe gearing??

BTW, I never got 14 mpg with any GM tduck hiway.....13.8 was the closesf I ever got. I continually get 19+ hiway with the 2500 ram hemi....

Maybe the new 2014s are better from GM....I dunno
  • Love mine, I paid more for mine and it had 56k on it. Regardless, the 6.0 with 6 speed is an awesome combo in my opinion. The 6.0 has already proved itself since it's introduction. No problems that I am aware of, my last one had 180k of hard life and ran like new.
  • That's low mileage on a great truck. There really aren't any issues with that year/engine/trans/etc. I would get it if that's what you want. It should be a strong puller.
  • I was thinking the same as the others, 88k for a 5 year old truck is not high at all. That's less than 18k a year.
  • That drivetrain should last a looong time if properly maintained. My 09 has 85,000 miles on it. Never back to dealer for any issues. Still on original brake pads. Second set of tires. Couple of interior trim piece annoyances, but that's been it.

Mixed driving yields about 14mpg (US)
  • I'm looking to replace my own '04 Expy with the same truck - here's the one I found locally: '08 Silverado 2500 LT

88k is nothing mileage-wise, actually quite low for an '08.
I'll be doing a road test with my TT this coming Saturday.
  • I wouldn't consider that high mileage at all. You'll like the six speed/4.10 combo. What will you be pulling with it?
