  • I'd opt for an F150 over a Ram 1500. Half ton Rams tend to be a little less capable than the others, or at least they are on paper. That said I started out in a half ton and won't ever go back to one. HD's cost only marginally more to buy and operate but offer a lot greater capability and heavier components that should hold up better over the long haul. Just my two cents and yes I realize not everybody needs the extra capability.
  • 3.5L Ecoboost in an F150 is a great option. They make way more torque at much lower RPM than any of the V8's offered from any manufacturer.

I haven't driven a RAM 1500, but just note that since '13 they have been an all coil spring suspension. This is a positive!!!! My '14 Ram 2500 is all coil spring and despite how huge the truck is, it's the smoothest riding HD truck I've ever been in. I would imagine the 1500's ride just as smooth or maybe even better. Also, I don't have experience with the RAM box, but I think that could be a really useful feature.

Aside from those differences I would guess the real difference comes to price, features, and your personal taste.

  • ecoboost has carbon problems and I don't trust it to hold up into high milage. would love one as a lease but for the long haul ill take displacement over boost.
  • If it was me, I'd be looking at something with the 3.5L Ecoboost engine.
  • this is true. im coming form a WJ though so 1000lb to 1650 is still a great step up. Will likely come down to the best deal just like to do my homework and discuss
  • potato/potatoe

I think both are excellent choices. I think Ram drives a bit more 'car like' and less 'truck like' than the F150, but you won't go wrong with either IMHO.

From what I recall also, if it matters, I think Ram half tons generally are on the low side of cargo capacity when compared with the others.

Test drive 'em both, with the wife (since it will be the family vehicle).

  • ya looking forward to it. im personally partial to the f150 but have nothing against the ram. the ram tends to be priced better and claims better milage numbers but I suspect given my tendency to drive with a heavy foot that the f150s numbers may win. This will definitely be our main family vehicle with the liberty on soccer mom duty for now.
  • I think the 150, with 5.0 would be a great choice, especially if it will be the family daily driver. I know the Ram 5.7 is a proven great engine, but may use more fuel on a daily basis.

Either, will be quite a step up!
