Time for new daully rubbers!

With the demands of a heavy camper I am curious what tires people are happy with, I have had the goodyear wrangler A/T and been happy but I am thinking about changing to the Michelin LTX M/S 2, has anyone used those or another tire they have liked?

  • Depends on what you need and want...
If you need a little more traction for forest service roads and the triple snowflake rating for passes in the winter I have had good luck with Goodyear Duratracs and now the new version BFG KOA All Terrains.

Otherwise I'd go with the Michelins mentioned above.
  • You know, it's funny: On my cars I've always had Michelin tires. But when I bought tires for my 4500 dually with 19.5s, I went with inexpensive Dynatraks. I've had absolutely great service and all 6 tires were only 1190.00 installed on the truck! They are able to be retreaded if I want, but frankly, I put so little mileage on them (probably less than 4k per year) that they will probably die of old age before I wear them out. I figure I'll replace them at about the 6 year mark, even with no wear, and I'll still have been happy. I'm averaging 11 mpg with the camper on and the cruise typically set at 63mph.
  • Kevin you pegged it right in your post...
    Michelin LTX MS2

I had those on my GMC Safari van for several years until a dipstick trucker plowed into me and wrote it off. About 3 years of service and the tires were still like new. And go anywhere in the snow. Drive circles around everyone else.

I had them on my DRW as the first replacement of OEM.
About 800 short of 80,000 miles I put another set on.
Wore those buggers out too and put another set of the same on.

I will never never never (did I say never?) never ever even try another brand of tires.
Hands down, these Michelins are by far the best tire I have ever had. I have been known to drive a little hard once in a while. Hard cornering with my dually and its like I'm glued to he road. They handle like a dream, and last longer than one could want.
I have had Toyos, Bridgestones and others. Toyos were junk, wore out a set in 20K. Waste of money IMO.
Since I have been running Michelins, I have had long life and trouble free service.
Unquestionably the best tire you can buy.
Sure you pay a little more........
Peace of mind is worth every penny.

And when I'm towing, of course I behave and be careful, but the LTX MS2's make for an absolutely relaxing drive. Heavy hard wind, pounding driving rain, black ice, you name it, they keep me glued to the road.
  • Not sure what rim size you have but Nitto Dura Grappler has some 17" with a load capacity of 3750# at 80psi. I had a set on my 2006 F250 Diesel - sold it with over 62,000 miles on these tires and still had plenty of tread left. Nitto also had other tread patterns and rim sizes available. Check Discount Tire's website.
  • On on my second set of Michelins. The first set of LTX M/S was replaced under warranty even though I'd had no problems. The second set lasted around 50,000 miles. The third set is the LTX M/S 2. I've only had them for a couple months but they're doing fine.
I typically carry between 5,000 and 9,000 pounds on my rear axle depending on the use of the truck. When I had the boat the whole rig with TC and boat was around 18,000 pounds. The tires wear good, ride good, and just work really well.
Michelin was one of very few companies to offer a mileage warranty on a truck tire. When the second set didn't make the warranty they told me that Michelin probably wouldn't do anything since my truck was a commercial vehicle. (I have a flat bed on it with tool boxes for my electrical business.)
Overall, I recommend the tires but don't expect to get super great wear if you run heavy all the time like I do.
  • In the past I have used Toyo HT's. They work well and last about 50,000 miles, are quiet and have decent traction in rain/snow. This go around I drank the Michelin lovers kool-aid and I am now using Michelins LTX M/S and wonder how much longer they will last at about 25,000 miles. So far not impressed.
  • The trucking company I work for ran wrangler h/t, and a/t for years on vans. We made the switch the michelin ltx m/s 2 and could not be happier with them. We don't go to max weight all the time so I cant say to much about that part, but they wear beautifully. Our 1st set outlasted the wrangler's by 50,000 miles. The winter traction is good also. I dont think you be unhappy with the michelins.
  • On my former '01 F350 DRW I had BFG All Terrains. They did great until I got the TC in my sig. That put the weight capacity at almost 100% of the posted weight rating of the tires, then I started having issues. Two rears bubbled, but were replaced for free by Discount Tire. Previous to my Eagle Cap I had an AF 1150, never had a problem. They had a good mix of offroad traction and on-road noise.
