Time for new tires, need suggestions

Hi all,

A couple of days ago we had a small issue rolling into Colorado Springs. During the last couple of miles I noticed a vibration and when we got to the campground, this is what we found:

The tire was fully inflated at about 50 PSI still, but it was obviously just a question of time (not much) before it would have blown. What is interesting (and maybe not surprising) is that this tire was previously the spare and I put it on when one of the tires had a screw cause a slow leak back in January. We probably have put on less than 500 miles on this particular tire, whereas the other three have 10-12,000 miles on them in the past 4 1/2 years. I guess shame on me for being too cheap to buy a cover for the spare :), I did keep it properly inflated though over the years.

Anyhow, the wife insists on new tires all around, so I am trying to research suitable replacements. We're in the metro Denver area with access to most tire dealers. They current ones are Carlisle 205/75 14". BTW, the date code on the blown tire is 4809, so a fairly late 2009 tire. We bought the trailer new with these tires in November 2010, so about a year later.

Thanks in advance for you suggestions.
  • Bought Maxxis brand ST 14 inch tires here in Colorado Springs from Discount Tire. Had to order them but had them in a week. $480 installed and balanced and new metal valves. Haven't used them so time will tell.
  • replacement tires---
Which ever brand you choose, make sure you check the date when the tires were manufactured( look on the side of the tire). When buying new tires I won't accept tires that are over 4 months old and/or prefer newer tires.

I've had great success with Goodyear Marathons. Never heard of Maxxis tires, but so many people on here seem to really like them, so they must be decent. My dealer pushed for Carlisle tires when I replaced last time, but I stuck with the Goodyears, the previous set lasted 10 years.

X2, Goodyear 10 ply, G rated tires is what I use. I run them at 110psi.
  • Discount Tire Direct online...they sell Maxxis 8008 with free shipping and no sales tax for most. Local tire shop mounted and balanced for $20/tire. Occasionally they offer a $100 coupon for buying 4 tires.
  • Just put five new Maxxis tires on our trailer.

My local Discount Tire ordered them. $98 each plus $13 each for mounting and balancing. I added metal stems and the replacement coverage, received a 10% military discount, and paid something like $570 OTD for all five.

Mine have been B rated at 35 PSI and more recently C rated at 50 PSI
