Hedgehopper, you have come to the right place to ask. A host of other TC enthusiasts and a varied choice of what a boondocking site could be and how to find one. I almost never camp with other people or groups, but did this a few weeks back. My friend brought up a good point, he’ll only camp where he feels comfortable and where we were going was not in his comfort zone. But, since I was going too, he was fine. Then he was the one that picked one super location! (He is on this forum, too) Our spot was a high point overlook, off a Forest Service Road.
What I am trying to say, is that you are the one that need to be comfortable with your choice/s. I doubt you would like my remote choices, one bit. For me, as I travel into an area, I get on the different Satellite sites and then drop out my motorcycle and go shopping for a site. For me, I know it when I see it. For urban camping, I look for industrial areas. These locations tend to be quiet at night, little traffic and long uninterrupted curb lines. A bonus is no residential areas to worry about being judged by homeowners. I use these spots when I am traveling through urban areas. Some of my favorite places to look for are small town airports and small town ball fields. One of my favorites was Lakeview, Oregon, as an example. Wal-Marts are just too busy, for my tastes. Some of the back two lane Highways, across America have small towns with little city Parks that you can pull into, park and sometimes get invited to a city Bar-B-Que or local High School Football Game. Isn’t America Great!
Just start out simple and what is comfortable for you. Soon, when you see a boondocking site, you too will know it. When I might need a campground, you could help me too. I stayed in one campground in 2013 and Mellow Mike was the one that suggested it. I stayed there again, 2014, because it was so great! They had showers! What a wonderful thing.
There are some great resources here, for the asking.
