This is a good thread topic...thanks to the OP for posting. It's funny reading all the posts and the different locations from which they reside. Seems like "boondocking" is relatively a western US term and "stealth-camping" is relatively a Eastern US term. We live in the NE US and although not entirely impossible to boondock, it is really more likely you are "stealth-camping." We live in the heart of the White Mountain National Forest, however you are NOT permitted to stay anywhere other then in a designated "fee camping area." BTW ALL trail head parking areas in the WNF are "fee areas" you need to pay for a permit to park there, but you are not permitted to stay overnight there. You might be able to "stealth-camp" one night and get away with it, but you'll eventually draw the attention of a LE officer and they'll ask you to relocate to an authorized "fee based camping area" (ask me how I know this). To us "stealth-camping" means not normally permitted and certainly is NOT long term.
We have been camping for 30+ yrs and when we travel the eastern side of the US we've resorted to "stealth-camping" the areas like Walmarts, Cracker Barrels, Flying J's, rest areas, closed casinos, even motel parking lots, all with permission. When we've camped in the western US we'll "boondock" the BLM, National forests etc. "Boondocking" to us IS permitted and can be long term.
Just our .02 worth. Whatever you call it, just go out and do it but enjoy doing it!
There is (legal) dispersed camping available in WMNF...
And many opportunities for "boondocking" in the North woods of ME/VT/NH...not like out West....but it is there if you look!
GOOD JOB Billtex!
There are two areas in the WMNF, Haystack Rd. and Cherry Mountain Rd. in Twin Mtn. NH, BUT YOUR NOT SUPPOSE TO TELL ANYONE THAT!;) Now it's not a secret! ;) And they are FREE!
I didn't name them....
BTW; I can think of at least 1 more...
