Tire blow out trailer
My buddy just sent me these on the way to Va. From Ct. Trailer is under one year old.

- Purchased to new trailers. Both were loaded to max GVW in excess of 10K. Both experienced OEM ST tire blowouts/failures while traveling rough sections of interstate highway. Tire pressure was at max PSI in both cases.
Upgraded to LT tires in both cases and my tire issues magically went away.
ST tires are marginally rated and not designed to the same criteria that a LT tire has to meet.
ST tires are not designed to carry live passengers and thus are made to meet a lesser standard than passenger rated tires.
Call me naive but I just don't believe the root of all the ST tire failures are operator error.
These same operators must wise or just get lucky when they upgrade to LT tires and their blow out issues go away - edit

So you can go on making excuses for ST tires failures, or you can get LTs an not need to make anymore excuses... LTs can be treated like tires. Not like pieces of glass.
To me, this pretty wraps it up neatly. Over and over we here many folks on various forums defending ST tires, and so often with all the normal "blame the user" disclaimers.
We just don't hear all these horror stories with LT tire users, because they are simply out there using their LT tires on their trailer the same as they do the car or truck tires.
We don't always get to choose how smooth the roads are that we drive on, and other things that go bump in the night.
Having the extra reliability of a better tire is quite simply worth it to me.
For those who wish to continue using the lower price point ST tire, I say fine, have at it, but let's not cloud the issue by trying to say they are as good as a LT tire for the trailers.ReneeG wrote:

Couple of things here. We had a blowout on our fifth wheel recently and we have a TPMS system. No warning and I had just looked at the screen, when boom!
Just a little bit of a tangent here since I am in the market for a TPMS - can you tell me what brand / model you have?
Agree on the other points regarding the tires. I too have Westlakes and my trailer is almost a year old. I do ensure that the pressures are at 50psi cold and I cruise at 60mph (for fuel consumption). The weighed weight of the trailer is such that the tires are below the rated limit. With the TPMS I figure I would have more warning of any impending problems.2oldman wrote:

Look at the second picture. It says Westlake on the sidewall. Westlake ST tires came with my TT and enclosed car trailer, both of which I bought new. I have around 10K towing miles on them and *knock on wood* so far no problems.
Here's another thing I've always wondered about trailer tires: When the RV is delivered from the factory, I highly doubt the delivery truck is sticking to 65 mph or less. Imagine the typical 1K+ mile delivery range from the manufacturer to dealer at 80 mph, and the tires may already be seriously compromised before you buy it.- If you have the space and wheel size for LT tires they are an alternative. If you don't there are better choices in ST tires that can be very successfully used. I have used ST tires since 1998 with great results.

Call all the BULL you want. You are actually making my point in that paragraph.
ST tires need to treated like fine china... Curb a tire, you caused the failure. Hit a pot hole, the blame for the failure is yours,,, not the poor abused ST tire. Exceeded 65 MPH? the catastrophic failure is all your fault.
These and more, common operating conditions just don't cause failures on a routine basis for LT tires.
