I made the mistake this past spring about asking for thoughts on tires. Our HTT had Greenball Transmasters OEM and they had served us perfectly. At about the 4+ year time, we replaced them with the same and again, perfect service. Before leaving for FL, we decided better safe than sorry and I was asking for some general information/other ideas. Huge mistake that I'll never make again. The tire question is probably the most inflammatory topic on the forum. As odd as it may seem, we hadn't planned to buy tires and being retired we're on a (gulp) budget. Good, bad or somewhere inbetween, Maxxis are not in our budget. Neither is a Class A or a Cadillac. I had one member tell me that if I didn't care about killing my family, to just go and buy the cheapest thing I could find. Seemed a bit rude. More researching, we discovered that Sam's Club now carries the Greenball Transmasters. And (another gulp), they're not made in the US. We chose the Transmasters and came in right around $400 + or -. We made our FL trip without issue and then decided to move to a TT. Those tires had maybe 2000 miles on them and last we heard from the new owners, they're doing just fine. A part of our thinking on the Transmasters, other than perfect service we'd had starting 8 seasons, is that Sam's is pretty much anywhere you're heading, so we could get service if needed.
My cousin and DH were constantly having blowouts at about the 3 - 4 year mark. They live in TX and thought that might contribute with the extreme heat. More thinking and talking and he came to the realization that he was not 100% diligent about checking tire pressure before pulling out. Generally he bought whatever brand he could get in whatever town was closest to the blowout location. My DH never leaves the driveway without checking tire pressure and torque. Could at least partially account for the good service we've had.
I promised myself - and my DH - that I would never, never ask for an opinion on tires. Next most controversial subject is the black tank and what to do or not to do.
