OP here. I can't believe I have to spell this out to the over-weight crowd but here goes: I was no-where near my max weight in any regard. Pin weight is 3500# (CAT), truck payload is 4,931# (door sticker). CAT says I have 7400# on my rear axle, well under max of 9375# GAWR. Chevy says my max 5th towing weight is 22,550#, well over my trailer's 19,000# GVWR. Lightly loaded I am 16,600# (CAT). We were lightly loaded yesterday, only bicycles in the garage, empty tanks except for some water, end of trip so most food/beverage were gone.
Michelin's were new last Jan and have 11,000 miles on them. I was asleep and wife woke me to loud rumbling sound that had just started. I didn't know it was a tire as there was no bang and Interstate 8 is a very noisy road. We pulled over anyway to investigate.
My truck is top-of-the-line LTZ but TPMS was not available, as it was on my previous 2500. My Michelins are rated for 3085# single and 2885# dual. If my math is correct, there was half of 7400# on the single tire or 3700#, which is 615# over the single rating, which it had become. I'm not going to worry about 615# for the short duration that it was.
I found nothing in the tread to show a cause for the blow out and Discount gave me a free new tire. Funny thing is I'm more concerned with blowing a trailer tire and haven't given the truck's tires much thought. Thanks for all the replies.
