Tire buying advice on recent used purchase

The short of it
The new and almost new tires are 235/75/15 Goodyear Wrangler Radial tires are rated at 2039# each

The other 2 are 225 tires, but have no idea info as I need to replace them before they are road worthy so honestly, didn't really look at info beside the size.

What I just mentioned is how I bought the trailer!

Should I buy 2 more + spare Goodyear 235 light truck tires so I stick with the 235 recommended on the trailer tag?
Or
Do I buy 5 new ST 225 tires (WAY easier to find St225 than 235's)and sell off the 235 Goodyear tires on Craigslist. With this option in mind, should I be buying tires rated for more weight so I can run the recommended 35psi on trailer tag vs max psi on tire to stay near the weight rating?

With a blown tire 1 hour into my first time pulling a travel trailer, I'd like to avoid that again lol. Luckily the 2nd axle tire held till I was off the road.

The long of it
I bought this travel trailer 3hours away last Thurdsay. 1 hour away it got a flat tire, no spare, and it's 8 at night. So I left it in town and came home so wife could get to work next day. Friday I went back down, met the seller and he actually bought the new tire. Limited places were open because of Holiday and the only tire we could get was the light truck tire I mentioned. But coincidentally enough, the exact same tire was on of the other rims and pretty new. The last 2 tires are dry rotted from sitting and are 225/75/15 trailer tires.

The trailer's intentions are to visit her family 9 hours away (1000 mile round trip) couple times a year, and have our own space. Me, the wife, 2 kids, 4 dogs (that I'd rather not keep leaving with my mom like I have been on these trips). Other than that, its here at the house for any of her family come stay and have their own space also. So it's gonna sit a lot. Point is, I at this point dont plan on hauling it across country for days at a time. Makes 1 jog across the state and back couple times a year.

  • I'm also keeping the HT tires in mind. I've seen a lot of good reviews on certain ST tires. While others have multiple complaints of tread seperating or blow outs. So I'm watching rewviews too!
  • Thanks for the advice guys.

I know I was having the biggest problem with the 2 Goodyear tires because they were more all terrain, but more after LT for ST and if it was wroth replacing 5 tires or just get 3 more if they were fine.

That also makes sense about the p235 on the plate if ST tires weren't a thing, or weren't a common thing back then.

I think I'll lean towards some heavy ply ST225 tires then and run the higher PSI.

Again thanks guys. Had a pop up before but once we had the first kid I sold it anticipating getting something hard side that can not let him curiously find his way out the side of a bed. Towing 30' 6000lbs+ trailer is little more to think about than the 12' 1400# pup.
  • The goodyear wrangler LT tires that you have will work. They wouldn't be my first choice in an LT tire, but they are better than any P or ST tire out there.

If it was mine I would get a couple of LT tires a little better suited for TT use, such as the wrangler HT that was mentioned. TT tires tread doesn't have to match, so it will work fine, and be the most cost effective option at this point.
When it is time to replace all of the tires next time, you can get ones that match... In the meantime, do some research on tires that are used on TTS. Pay particular attention to the govt. required testing standards for ST tires vs. LT tires. Then you will see why many of us use and recommend LT tires.
  • Why not check out the Maxxis website and look at their ST225/75R15 trailer tires? They offer an 8 ply and a 10 ply. As for an ST tire, they can't be beat. Be sure your have your new tires balanced, too.
  • The Wranglers in the clicky are the wrong type of tread for a trailer.
You need the Wrangler HT wrangler HT.
    They come in a LT235/75-15 C load range C at 1980 lbs capacity at 50 psi or;
.. the LT215/75-15 D load range at 2095 lb capacity at 65 psi. The LT Wranglers can be found nation wide. Run these tires at max sidewall pressures. The 35 psi in the placard is the max psi for those P tires on the placard. You have changed to a different tire so the 35 psi simply doesn't apply to the different tires.

The P235 15" tires on the placard in the picture are a P (passenger car tire) which we used before the ST tire came out...and is still used today if you can find the proper size and load capacity.

I would stick with the LT Wrangler HT as its going to last 7-10 years and isn't speed restricted to 65 mph as ST tires can be. Great upgrade option over the P or any brand ST tire.
  • I would call K Z and find out what they would recommend as replacements.

1996 was almost 20 years ago. I doubt they would suggest "P" tires, but you never know.
