Tire replacement before trip, would you?

The westlake tires on my RV are 4 years old in November. We are headed to Atlanta in 3 weeks for a 9 day trip. I have checked the tires and there are zero cracks or bulges and they tires are wearing evenly, they currently have around 6k miles on them. My goal was to wait until next spring to swap the tires since we won't be making anymore trips this year do to a baby. I've read a lot of review on other tires. It haven't seen much in the way of westlakes.

If I do swap I will be going with the new Goodyear Endurance e rated tires.

  • I pulled 2 Maxxis off yesterday: dated Apr 14 a little over 12,000 miles on them. Still looked good, but I replaced them just for the hell of it.

Every tire I have blown was aired properly, taken care of correctly, and in it's 4th year. not ran too fast or anything stupid. Not 4 years old, but in the 4th year. I have had 3 blown TT tire, 1 was a Goodyear, the others tow masters.
I will NEVER leave the yard with tires in their 4th year again. For me it is 3 and off. If you have never sat on the side of a interstate changing a tire. You should trust me. You don't want to.

IMOP you are taking a huge chance. For me there is no question. I would jerk those tire off in a New York minute. 4 year old tires are just looking for a place to come apart. Don't care who made them.
  • Thanks for the prompt replies. I'll check them all again including the spare before the trip and head out. I always carry enough cash to cover most things while on long trips.
  • I don't think I'd be too concerned about getting new tires. However, if it would help ease your concerns, just make sure you bring along enough capital (money), so if a problem does happen on the road, you have the means to replace all 4 tires at a moment's notice! It never hurts to be prepared.
  • questions, has this trailer been sitting in the sun all this time? if so I,d change them. under cover I,d say no. the sun will eat tires. make sure you have all the equipt to change a tire and a couple extra 2x4,s
  • One trip, not using it much next year, bambino? No new skins.
  • If you have properly maintained your tires, make sure the spare is good and have fun.
  • the tires on our trailer were four years old and looked in perfect condition.
We had a blow out and I put the spare on and bought a new spare.
A week later and about a hundred miles a second one blew out.

If you can afford it without it hurting your money situation, I would change them before the trip. (piece of mind is a good thing)

  • I would check that my spare is in good shape and hit the road. If your tires are holding air, show no sidewall issues and the tread looks good, what's the worry?
