I camp in the national forests and haven't needed an awning. I have also found that in the campgrounds I stay at, the space right next to the RV is NOT a desirable spot to set up my outdoor living area. That area is often sloped or has a barrier of some sort to keep folks from driving off the parking spur (boulder, 4x4 posts, trees, etc.).
I could see it being more desirable in RV parks, deserts, etc., where the ground is flat and there isn't an awkward transition from parking spur to living area.
