I know for a fact that deleting the EGR has very little impact on performance or mileage. If the EGR is working properly there is no advantage to deleting it. It just makes the truck impossible to sell or trade in. Trust me on that. My mileage decreased about a mpg after I had it done.
I didn't have the work done intentionally. I had a blown head gasket and went to a shop to get it fixed. They said they could "bulletproof" my truck and keep future problems from happening. When I got my truck back and looked at the parts they put on, several of them said "for off-read use only". The shop went out of business shortly after that so I'm stuck with it unless I want to pay another 3 or 4 thousand to undo what I just paid 8000 to have done.
The problem with an EGR is that it will eventually plug up. The Deposits it leaves in the intake runners and ports of the head build up to the point where performance suffers.
Generally speaking, the harder the truck is run, the better the emissions systems function.
