To "delete" or not to "delete"

I have a 2012 Cummins, even the Dealer suggest I have a reputable company delete it. I have done very little research on this, but was curious how many of you have had this done? The dealer said it will improve fuel mileage, increase horsepower and decrease maintenance...

A reputable company you say? Do reputable companies delete federally mandated emissions equipment? Not being sarcastic here. A serious question.

Interesting request... My BIL was faced with the same recommendation with his 09 RAM cummins, and he decided to just unload the truck. Loosing your warranty is a big risk and then using a tuner to work around the delete usually adds more power to a engine that already has marginal head gasket sealing. Once you start this process your truck could become a big money pit. Also like stated above if you ever want to trade the truck in most if not all dealerships won't tough it. If you sell it you better disclose that it has or had a tuner.

I would recommend "not to delete". If the reason for deleting is because your having emission related problems, then I would unload the truck and move on.

There is nothing "marginal" about the Cummins head gasket. Nothing.

Wow post has no info and all reply's are assuming?

I believe they are all talking about an EGR delete. It's pretty standard discussion with Cummins. Just do a search on "delete Cummins" and you'll find most all the links are in regards to the EGR and particulates (diesel dirty stuff).

  • Some dealerships will not work on them or take them in trade if they're molested.
There's also the distinct possibility emissions testing will come to your area. I can tell you from experience it happens suddenly and when it does, your looking at thousands in repairs. Some people think they'll be able to get around the requirements but you can indeed end up with a rig you cant lic.

That is all true. It is however an EPA violation. If you are in a position where you might make somebody else really unhappy (i.e. you are an employer, or even a landlord) your chances of being reported go way up, as do the potential fines (EPA has the option to issue an income-based fine for businesses).

Also.... dealers are not supposed to do any warranty work if the system is not intact. Even worse... to drive the truck after doing a delete, you have to run a programmer and Cummins considers that grounds to terminate your engine warranty.

So... weigh the risks and benefits carefully.
