I haven't found any difference in my 5500 and 3500 forward of the drive shaft. The ECM may prevent an OEM pickup tune due to the associated VIN, but a ECM swap or aftermarket tune would open up a chassis cab's performance.
With 4.44 gears, I'm happy with the performance at 22k lbs GCW and will not be modifying my CTD.
*DEF and fuel tanks are bigger in chassis cabs.
