the camera is around 1'-2' off the ground, looking forward so after you go through the ezpass it takes a picture of the rear tag.
than they must have some system (or maybe an off shore person) that looks at the picture to figure out the plate number.
I have a truck account so I had one of my Z pass transponders registered for my Dads motorhome. one day he got a letter in the mail that he ran through the system without paying, it include a picture of a JEEP that had a tag that was 1 number different than Dads motorhome. I had to call them and find a human to talk to. after an hour of playing phone games I finally got someone. they looked at the same picture on file, said they were sorry and that was it.
But the picture was a very low angle looking at the rear tag. it was taken somewhere up in NJ.
PS: in PA, ezpass said that if I was towing campers, I needed a commercial account. that required keeping $1K in the ezpass account in reserve. so I went with NJ ezpass which gives me a truck transponder without the $1K requirement.
No idea what the difference is in the transponder but I tried to put a truck one in my jeep and they said no. they sent me a new one, looked exactly the old ones.
Interesting. As many times as I've been through the PA TPK transponders in a big truck, I was only aware of the overhead array, not any at ground level. I used to run out to Reitnauer Trailer by Philly and pick up new trailers for the dealership regularly.
I have the MASS PASS transponders in all our vehicles and they are vehicle specific.
Illinois must just be overhead because I went through a set on the tollway and never heard anything. (prior to my Mass Pass) and that was a couple years ago. My cousin who lives south of Chicago told me the citation for using the EZ Pass lanes on the Illinois Tollway without a transponder was $175 buck fine. Glad I never got it.
On the transponder, it's all inside than counts, don't know how they work but they work with no batteries or anything. Must be similar to the chip in a CC.
