Not so good on paved hairpins for sure. What roads are you using? I'd like to google earth them.

I think ALPAR is referencing the 2007 and up transmission. My 2006 doe. Not lock up in second or third

That's what I was afraid of. The roads I go on need 1st gear going downhill at the hairpin turns. You are just short of stopped.

According to Allpar the 68RFE locks up in 2nd thru 6th.

On really steep low speed downhills, less than 20mph, I use low-range. Works very well.

The steep mountain roads I drive will require that I stay locked up in 1st to 10 mph or less. I wouldn't want to have it come unlocked in the middle of a hair pin turn
I don't know what the grade is in the middle of those turns but some look straight down. Lol
I may have to look for a newer used manual gas truck also. I was thinking of getting lazy and going auto. I've got a manual truck I can take any where, with out the trailer is not bad when in town. Out on the road I'd be pretty beat up after a 100 miles or more. But where I camp I drive very few if any freeway miles. I very rarely drive over a hundred miles. But it's a 2 1/2, 3 hour trip because of the roads

50 grand is a lot of money for a truck that isn't recommended to drive in town.

My understanding is the 68rfe locks from 3rd on. The switch is to lock in 2nd.

Tow/haul mode will let it lock in 3rd gear.

If this is the case, why are folks adding "Torque Converter Lock-Up" switches to their transmissions?

And why are there $400 devices being sold to keep the torque converter locked in other than OD?

Not being a wise ass, just don't understand. Are we SURE the TC locks up in 3rd gear in Tow/Haul?

Yes the Ford 6 speed auto will stay locked up down that low in TH and the manual mode. In TH it will down shift but stay locked up until you are almost stopped, in manual it will stay locked up but if you don't manually down shift it it will go to 2nd when you come to a stop and stay there. I found that out by forgetting that I was in manual mode.
