JCB Fastrac tractors used the Cummins 5.9. 6000 hours was about it. CaseIH, those I’m familiar with used other Cummins engines with better longetivity more in line with John Deere, New Holland, and others.
I’m not knocking the 5.9/6.7. It may be just fine in a pickup truck where it only runs max performance for short spurts but it just isn’t what it’s bigger siblings are at all contrary to what some want to claim.
It probably has more to do with how the engine is designed. The Cummins 5.9L and 6.7L are really not ideal for use in tractors mainly because they are designed for higher peak power and torque levels than most tractors normally run in. Most larger Cummins and other tractor specific diesel engines are designed to achieve peak torque really low at around 1,000-1,300 rpms and have a max speed of around 2,000 rpm so you don't have to run them as high to get the torque and power you need.
This is probably why the Iveco 5.9L that was meant for tractors and slower road speeds had a much longer stroke with lower peak power and operating rpms. The diesel engines in our pickups are not ideal for these kind of applications.
