Bottom line it's what you are comfortable with. I got a good price on mine and the carfax listed what was done on the engine. I have a mechanic who specializes in pickup diesels so I had him go through it. The engine is picky about the quality of its coolant and engine oil. Towing is listed as severe service so I change the oil every 5,000 miles and make sure the coolant system was flushed. Oil also operate the injectors so clean oil helps keep the injectors working correctly. Keep and eye on temps and coolant quality.
What seems to be the pattern is the oil cooler clogs on coolant side, EGR cooler overheats, leaks coolant into engine and pops the head gaskets. EGR systems makes soot and can clog vanes in turbo.
Since the introduction of Ultra Low Sulfur fuel all companies have had injector issues due to reduced lubrication from fuel. A fuel additive might be worth your time.
EPA is the biggest issue with the 6.0, well its the enemy of any diesel engine. EGR valves fight N2O, but create soot. Then you add DEF and DPF to filter and burn off soot. Soot clogs up all the small ports and is causing issues in the class 8 truck engines. 9 times out of 10 if I have a truck out of service today it's an issue with the EPA systems on the truck. EGR valves, DPF clogged, regen failures you name it.
Sorry, bottom line do your homework and decide for yourself. 6.0 bashing seems to be a sport. Yes, the 6.0 has had some issues but there are known causes and ways to prevent it.
