lets see here, a lot of 'dont buy' from people who have never had one, a few 'I had one with problems' and then there are some who 'have had few if any problem'!
well I ve got one spent $3500 or so for preventative measures (studs, oil cooler, bullet proof egr tube. Tech brought it up to latest 6.0 TSB's and it runs great. What is good is that you see thousands of these vehicle towing and being used daily and the only ones that complain about them are the non owners. Not saying the cummins isnt an ok engine, they have their own issues. same with chebby. I have friends with cummins and they wish they could afford to pay to get performance while towing most just keep what they have maybe install an exhaust. They wait for fuel pumps to fail at the in opertune times, or experience a white knuckle 'death wobble' while driving.
Yes ALL have their issues. If you can get it cheap go for it. The 6.0 has been noted for its ability and was recommended for purchase by one of the diesel magazines recently because it does not have all the latest epa junk on it and for a few thousand it can be a very dependable engine. I think you said $7500, well add another $4000 worse case and you easily have a $16-20K vehicle for just over half price. Like anything else in life its a decision YOU have to make.
