Tow vehicle

Twins are growing, time to upgrade Travel Trailer and tow vehicle. Looking at 7800 dry weight 32 foot travel trailer. Having a hard time upgrading to a diesel at a cost of $50.000. F-250 is just to much vehicle for my everyday use. Considering a new F-150 Eco with the max towing package. I understand max tow weight is 11300 lbs. Feed back would be appreciated. Thanks
  • I have driven daily and towed with both 1/2 & 3/4 ton trucks. I could never tell the difference in size between the two. The body, I don't think, changes between the two. You still have the same body size, just heavier frame, brakes, etc., so toodling around they're the same, except the 3/4 sits up a little higher. One is not any harder or easier to drive than the other one, until you hook a weight on rear end, IMO.
  • The Eco boost is capable but you will be at its limits. You will not find the Eco Boost you need just sitting on the lot.
You will need both max tow and max payload options to handle the trailer mentioned. The truck will need to be factory ordered to get it with both options
Price that special ordered truck and compare price to a F-250 which you will find on the lot.

As one other stated, PLEASE do yourself a favor and look at the TT's GVW, NOT it's "dry weight". No one tows a TT "dry", (meaning nothing in it)....Use GVW and go from there.

I'm not familiar with Ford's specs, and a Ford guy could probably tell you if there would be any issues, (doesn't sound like it to me), but not knowing the TT's GVW, is a number I would really want to know.
  • Keep in mind the receiver rating as well. My trailer with a dry weight of 6,800 comes in about 8,100 loaded. The way I am setup I have 1,100 on the receiver and the receiver on my 2012 is rated at 1,150. You would be starting out 1,000 heavier than I am so if you ended up with the same percentage on the tongue (13.5%) you would be over.

I am happy with my setup.

Enjoy your twins. Mine are grown now, hope to have them in an adjacent site one of these days.

    Good luck to you,
    Stu
  • The mileage is not to much difference between the 7,100 pound curb weight diesel and the Ecoboost with a curb weight some 2,000 less (check with your local Ford dealer for exact numbers).

I would get the F-150 for that trailer, you will save several thousand dollars over the life of the truck, not only in price and payments, but in oil changes, and other things like fuel filters.

    Fred.
  • How terrible would it be to go with a smaller trailer? How much do you plan to use it? Our kids spend the entire day outside and only come in to sleep and eat.
  • Ziggy.....while you wait for replies, use the search function here. Lots of info on the ECO there.
  • The price tag is more of the issue with the big diesel. Still in the early stages of shopping for both. Hoping someone has experience the eco boost and the max towing package.

Well no one tows DRY! How about more information? TT GVWR hitch weight, that F150 may run out of payload and tow capacity faster than you think.

If that 7,800# was the GVWR for your TT I would say no issue. The Max of 11,300 is the smallest lightest EcoBoost.
Then there is F-250 is just to much vehicle for my everyday use the difference in size between the two is minimal, 90% is in your mind, I daily drive my 2500, and don't have any issues with it, 99% is perception!!
