Tow vehicles

My wife and I want to get out of the old motorhome and get a travel trailer. I don't have the cash flow to but all new. What's a good used tow vehicle? Tahoe, Expedition? We're looking at a 26 - 28 foot trailer. I was wondering if the 4.8 in the Tahoe will pull a travel trailer? It seems a shade small but, I see Tahoes all over the campgrounds.
  • We pull our 25 ft trailer with one of two Expeditions and love them. The RPMs climb as we climb the steepest parts of the Rockies but that's expected from a gasser.
  • We tow our 27ft with a 2012 Avalanche. We sometimes pull our 20 ft boat behind the trailer. We had a 2013 and liked it so much we bought another.
  • Just got back from the Smoky Mountains. Pulled a 26 ft. Crossroads Slingshot with a 2008 GMC Yukon Denalli with the 6.2l and HD Tow Pkg. used the tow/haul mode the whole way. The engine is a beast and didn't struggle a bit. The tow/haul function adjusts the tranny setting real time up or down grade...even on cruise control. Two adults, two grand kids and gear for 4 days. Felt very comfortable and secure with this set up.
  • I have a 2010 Silverado 1500 and pull a 1995 26ft Four Winds and the truck really works hard...especially if it is not on flat roads. If I am pulling into a head wind the truck runs at high rpms just to keep it at a reasonable speed. If I camped a lot I would look for something with better towing capabilities, but since we only get out a couple times a summer I tolerate it. I use the truck 98% for commuting and 2% for trailering so I have the truck I need. If you want something that will do a better job towing look at a 2500...I assume you will be happier. My 1995 Four Winds might be a little heavier than some of the newer TT's so I'm not sure if it my 1500 would work better with a newer TT.
  • Find a low mileage F-150 Ecoboost with tow package in either 2011 or 2012. A lot of people dumped them because of all the "reported" problems with the Turbos.

I have a 2013 Ecobeast and absolutely love it.
  • When it comes to towing, Bigger IS Better:)
If you can swing the money, you'll be happier with a 'Burb or the Expedition, but check the towing capacities of all of them.
Some folks love using vans instead of SUVs, because of the added room inside, but you'll need one of the "350"s

Will the smaller SUV handle the trailer? Maybe, and there are plenty of people out there that would be willing to tow a 26' TT behind a Geo Tracker:S So, take it for what it's worth....get as much TV as you can, you'll be glad you did.
  • Go for an Excursion or Suburban 2500. They will offer the best bang for the buck and get you the best towing ratings.
  • Funny, up north all you see are 8 lug beasts at campgrounds. Tahoes are busy running to soccer practice, and most of the half ton subs don't even have hitches. A 5.3 3.42 4l60 combo in our trailblazer climbed PA hills towing a popup at 15mph. We were at 10k combined.
