Tow/Haul on Truck

I'm wondering how many of you use the "TOW/HAUL" mode on your trucks. I'm assuming this only a function with newer trucks but I imagine it's a feature across the board with the various makes. I have a 2013 Ford 350 and there's a little button that puts it in tow/haul mode. The ride is significantly different but I don't know that it's necessarily better. It almost seems like it takes more RPMs to move up to the next gear. Is that normal? Is it better for the truck? Does it not really make a difference? Hmm! So curious.

  • Your owner's manual should tell you how/when to operate the T/H Mode. Mine says to engage it when I'm towing approx 15,000 pounds.
  • I use it to hold a steady speed when going downhill on high-speed roads. We have a lot of mountain grades here in SoCal - The Grapevine on I-5, Cajon Pass on I-15, Mountain Springs Grade on I-8. With tow haul, I can do them at safe speeds with just that initial tap on the brakes to engage the tow-haul.
  • T/H should be used when hauling, especially heavy loads.

It changes the shift points on the tranny among other things that are beneficial to the vehicle.

I use it at all times while towing.
  • Tow/haul alters transmissionmshift points to aid in moving a load off the line. It also helps keep the transmission cool by firming ip shift points. Both good for your transmission.
