towing 333mks cougar

We are looking to buy a new 333mks cougar 5th wheel, just trying to get a feel what everyone is using to tow them with. Also any feelings pro/con on the 333mks. Thank you John
  • Just for reference, our 2012 f250 6.2 crewcab 4x4 has 2900 lbs. payload. Seems like that would be adequate to tow that trailer in that department. Keeping in mind our tt is less than 8500 lbs. loaded, I do think that truck would struggle a bit towing 12000 lbs. in hilly/mountainous terrain.
  • We don't have the f250 any longer. We a starting over with a 5Th wheel, went to a travel trailer for a few years but missed the room in the 5th wheel. What we are doing is looking real hard at the 333 mks cougar and looking for new truck, would like to stay with gas do to$$$. Was looking for info, thoughts on the 333mks and what trucks are being used to tow with. Thinking F250/350 8' crewcab 6.2L 4x4 would be about right, what do you all think. Thank you for advice so far. Thank you John

Do you plan to up date the TV?

The 20003 F250 will likely be above GVWR, but well within Axle and tire ratings, how does it tow the current 5er? The GVWR of the old and new 5er are not that muck different, 11,500# and 12,055# how much stuff do you carry?

If you do replace the TV, look at a 350/3500 SRW, easier to be within ratings.
  • Get a dually and do not worry about pin weight-that is what I did!-whsk
  • Thank you all for your answers.I should have said we are looking to buy a 333 MKS Cougar 5Th wheel and a new TV. We don't have the F250 now. What we were hoping to find is what you all are using to pull a 333MK, and if you have one how do you like it. We have been looking at the F250/350, mostly F350 with gas engine wwould like to stay away from Diesel($$) if we could. If anyone has any thoughts we would love to here them. Thank John ( Haven't figured out how to change Sig.)

If looking new the 333MKS has a ship weight of 10,222# and a payload of 1,833# for a GVWR of 12,055#. Dry pin is 1,655#, which will put a loaded rig at a pin between 2,000# and 2,400#.
Depending on how much payload your F250 has you will likely be over GVWR, but under axle and tire rating.
  • My 10K "12 F-250 diesel is borderline for hauling a 333MKS The advertised dry pin weight is 1600 and change.. the GVWR is 12K and change... figure 20% of 12K is 2400 and my payload is 2629 so my DW needs to diet a good bit before the next trip.. :D
  • 25 series minimum gas or diesel. Our last 5er was a Cougar and it was pretty light. Do you know what the GVWR is for your trailer? General rule is the pin will be 20% of GVWR. Match your TV payload to that pin weight.

As you are familiar with towing a fifth wheel, the only thing I would look at is the pin weight. The Cougar comes from the same manufacturer as the Keystone Montana that is the best selling fifth wheel. You might google 'montana owners rally' and watch some of the videos on how the factory makes the units and the customer's acceptance of them. If you can get a disk brake option get it as well as heavier axles and tires. All that will pay off in the long run.
