I'll second Bumpy's estimate, having just spent $1200 having the Equinox wired for towing and another $900 on a use Blue Ox tow bar and RVi2 brake system. If you'd like to use the car to explore along the way you should consider it.Otherwise the tow dolly or shipping is the way to go.

For a one-time move, rent a tow dolly. You can even buy one for about what it will cost to have the car trucked, sell it for most of what you paid for it when you get to your destination, and only be out a little more than licensing and registration cost.

The laws are no different for towing with a TC than they are for towing with an empty pickup truck, or a diesel pusher.

For 1 trip....rent a tow dolly with brakes and be done with it.

for what its worth, and I know the whole" my brother in laws, friends cousin told me" but I did talk with a guy who had a camper and truck very close to mine and he says he pulls a jeep flat, no brakes, never a problem. Again for what its worth. Id hook the whole thing up and take a couple of test drives, hit the brakes, make a couple of quick lane changes and see how things react. You will know pretty quick it its going to work for you for one trip or if its too out of control for you. Then make up your mind what the right thing to do.
If things are too crazy after your test drive you can always add the brake equipment, then you will always have the towing equipment to use later.

Ann it should be far cheaper than spending a bunch of money on gadgetry to flat tow your car, which sounds like you only will use for the move.

I've decided on a car dolly with electric brakes, found two on craigslist! Thanks for suggesting using a car dolly, never occurred to me! Gotta love the folks helping out on this site!
