Honda 2000 vs Honda 3000

Let me talk about why "I" chose the gen set I did. I posted this in the beginning RVing to help those beginner RVers with this choice. Let me also say that just because the set "I" chose for "my" needs might not fit your needs.

So for years I wanted to upgrade my Honda 650 watt gen set for something that I can do more dry camping with. This little gen set has served me well and is very quiet. The problem was when I wanted to use the microwave or when the wife wanted to use her hair dryer this little unit didn't cut it.

After buying a new trailer that now has AC, I now need a gen set that will better fit my needs. So for months I have been thinking about what I wanted to buy. I don't want to get into the Honda and other makes debate on this thread. This post will be long enough without getting into that. I will say the "other" off brand makes have been getting VERY good reviews and it was a consideration.

Around my area there are a lot of good gently used Honda gen sets so that's the way I went. The Honda 3000 set I bought cost me $1,250 bucks and only had a few hours on it.

The good of the 2000 watt Honda:

Weight; these things are light, 50lbs or so. I can handle 50lbs at this point in my life; 125? Not so much!

Redundancy; there is a lot to be said for having two gen sets. If one goes out for any reason you always have another to run smaller things like your microwave or hair dryer.

Split use; if you need less than 2000 watts of power you only have to set up and start one unit. Not so with my 3000 watt unit.

More watts; with 2- 2000 units you have 4000 watts of power and with the 3000 watt unit you have..........well........3000 watts. That other 1000 watts "may" come in handy for you?

So with all these good things going for the 2000 watt units why did I pick the 3000 watt Honda? Simple, two words: electric start! Now I can hear all the people right now saying: "my 2000 is so easy to start my 2 year old can start it." That may be true, but a 2000 unit can't do what "I" wanted to do without an electric start. That is; sitting in bed and wanting to turn on the AC without going outside and cranking up the gen set. Or standing in my kitchen and needing power for my microwave to heat up some leftovers. With a push of a button, I can start my 3000 watt unit all within the comfort of my trailer.

For "me", the overriding ability to remote start a gen set is far and above more important than all of the plusses the 2000 watt units had.
Is it for you? Maybe not. If that's the case you should chose another unit to better fit "your" needs.
