Towing above 65

In my humble opinion if you are going 55 or 60 in heavy Interstate traffic areas and you have a line of semis waiting to pass; you owe it to them to at least pick it up to their minimum or 65 mph just out of common courtesy. Now admittedly most of the time the traffic is light enough to just let them pass. However I have been caught in rush hour traffic.

Likewise I have been driving the speed limit on secondary roads and noticed a line of cars behind me. Again, I pull over and let them pass. It is the nice thing to do.

Also I do not like being in a line of cars waiting to pass a slow driver and I do not expect that other drivers do either.

So if 'they' are speeding you feel you should be pushed to also?
They are the ones breaking the law.

And every big accident with fatalities I've seen on the interstate it's always from a semi or several of them speeding or going too fast for conditions.

I certainly would not speed up because a dumb ass trucker wants to speed. Has nothing to do with their so called on the clock money issue most of them are just plain aggressive drivers and nothing more.
Actually they have more stringent rules today of how long they can stay on the road so they aren't driving fast asleep as the wheel. I've been behind numerous of them in the old days where they wandered across 4 lanes and back again while they were sleeping!

I full time now, spend a LOT of hours on the interstates, and as you can tell really fed up with semi drivers getting away with murder on the interstates riding drivers butts, speeding, intimidating other drivers with their rigs, etc. :(

Have to wonder how many that feel its OK to exceed the tire speed rating also choose to ignore engine red line on the tach. After all you can clearly run the engine faster so what's the problem. Maybe the tack is there jsut to fill up the space on the dash.

Don't put run your tire rating and keep the greasy side down!

If you are doing the required minimum speed posted and are in the right hand lane, in whatever type of vehicle, just what is the problem with people passing?

Traveling at 60 mph on the Interstates, everything will pass you. At 65 mph you keep up with most truck packs if that is their posted limit.

At 70 mph you will get passed by most cars because no one wants to drive behind a TT. You also will be pulling over to pass the slower trucks.

Since my preferred speed is 60 mph, I try to;
• Avoid the Interstates. Not always easy.
• Drive the interstates at 60 mph if the truck traffic is light.
• Ride with the Truck herd at 65 mph. in heavier traffic to avoid being passed by all the trucks.

I do actively seek our alternates to the Interstate routes but in large metro areas the Interstate is often the best option.

Driving at 70 mph is not the problem, stopping at 70 mph can be. Mileages also suffers.

Simple....the extra 15 feet per second is often the difference in getting stopped or not. Assume that your reaction time to a blow out or strong wind gust is 3 - 4 seconds to see, react and hit the brakes. You've just eaten up 45 - 60 feet. Not sure younger driver vs older driver makes a lot of difference. Younger seems to be invincible, older may have slower reaction time, but it probably all equals out. Younger minds wander the same as older....have been both and can confirm this.

This discussion is one I've never completely understood. Folks get all worked up over inches or a mile or two per hour, when what matters is your safety, your family's safety and the others on the road. IIRC, there's been plenty of research done confirming that lower speed does save lives. If you need to be somewhere at exactly 4:00 and need to drive 75 to make it, you should be leaving earlier. The past couple of years DH has asked me to do virtually all the driving. He's amazed at all the things he never saw before. Not because he didn't have the opportunity, but because he had a very heavy foot - NOT towing. I generally tow right around 62 - sometimes with cruise, sometimes not. I'm far from being an aggressive driver, but not a poke-along either. The only ticket I've ever had was for speed - go figure....57 in a town that was only 3 blocks long and I swear there were no signs. I watch down the road, look for possible problems like a semi flying by and try to be prepared for it. It's very relaxing for us. I feel much more in control. Take it easy, enjoy the drive, you don't know what's around the next corner.
