Towing and repair facilities

Hello, all. We are taking our small trailer on a two-week trip from Napa CA to Death Valley, and back through Hwy 95 to Reno, and then back to home. I am trying to find a list or directory of towing and repair facilities along the way, as a "just in case".

I did a search on Google, as well as on this forum without luck. Any ideas? .....Thanks...................Dan
  • Are you driving some hoopde that breaks regularly? It isn't something I have ever concerned myself with. If and when it happens is the time to look.

The local police or highway patrol has a list of places to call.

Thanks, folks. I am trying to avoid another subscription to Good Sam's Towing. It looks like I'll have to Google each area that we'll be in.

All these RV emergency road side subscriptions can ONLY call towing/repair shops that are on their "list" of contractors.

You could be broke down across the street from a repair shop and if it is not on their 'list' of contractors you can not use them if you want GS to pay for it.

So your repair truck might have to come from 2 hours away depending where you break down.

If your not a subscriber any mobile repair shop will come out. You'll find your phone will give you better and more correct directions to the nearest to where you are at repair/tow shop when and if you need it. :C

And don't forget about searching/using RV Mobile Repair guys for repairs on the RV. Inexpensive, IMHO the BEST for RV repairs, and they will come to where ever you are at.

I haven't broke down any where's in the US where there wasn't an RV Mobile Repair Guy within a stones toss away. AND they can connect you with a profession local for rv towing.
  • Went from Las Vegas to CA last year through Death Valley - there isn't much of anything out there to find. If you're going west, make sure your rig can handle miles of steep climbs coming up out of Death Valley. If you go east, make sure your brakes are in perfect condition for going down the grades.

We climbed up and out of DV after the NHRA Finals in Las Vegas with a 40' DP pulling a Jeep and we did fine, but you have stay in your engine's power band and watch out for the idiots in your lane as they come around the corners too fast - there's no shoulders on most of that road.

  • Been doing this "RV" thing since 2002 on my own and with my folks since I was a baby.. Have yet to need any service to bail us out... Just lucky I guess..

I've had my grey tank literally fall out on me.. Twice.. But they happened while in camp and I had the tools on hand to fix it on the spot, as it was just the brackets that held the tank up had shifted. Easy fix for the most part. I've had other little things happen, but always seemed to be able to fix to the point of at least getting to the intended destination and dealing with it there. So far, nothing that has ruined a trip.. Just made for a good story later on! :)

I probably pack an extra #200 of tools and other stuff for the "just in case" stuff that happens. I hope to never need or use it, but I pack it all the same. I've loaned out tools to others in camp and have had other supplies on hand that has helped a fellow RVer out in a pinch.. Good Karma might be on my side too? ;)

My plan B is the multiple CC's in my wallet.... :)

    Good luck!

    Mitch
  • I tried to do the same thing for our 2001 pick up for the I-5 corridor. After many attempts what works best for me, was to simply google something like....RV repair & (what ever city or town your close to) And many RV parks have names and numbers of mobile mechanics.

Would be nice to have a directory of places handy, but I haven't found one yet.
  • Get a roadside assistance policy. Good Sam and Coach-net are the most popular.

You should know you never break down near a repair facility.
    It's part of Murphy's Law. :S
  • In my experience it is the road side assistance company that makes the call.

On my recent break down in Indianapolis the roadside assistance called two different towing services before they found one that would tow my TT.

They did take it to the local TT dealer of my choices. Many locations may not that option.
