I've towed a heavier boat trailer for years and years. I know holiday weekend traffic fun. It was actually one trip to St. Helen and the 7 hour drive home that got me into flying and not driving to the former inlaws cottage. But then the Full Size Bronco 5.8L didn't care what was behind it. It got 12 mpg on the freeway without a trailer, and 11 mpg with a 4500 lb trailer :)
IF we decide to get a truck, it is unlikely to be this calendar year. I'll know on the first trip and for sure by the 2nd trip how it well it will perform. Like I said, I have a friend with an identical set up that's towing 4,500 and hasn't had an issue. Anecdotal, absolutely, but it can be indicative.
My hope and intention with this post was if I'm missing anything with proceeding with this tow vehicle. I know I'm pushing the wt limits... but I'm also an automotive engineer that knows exactly what goes into tow ratings. 7 times out of 10, cooling capacity is the limiting factor, braking usually being second. I'm considering a Bluetooth plug in and monitoring program to monitor the cars critical data. This particular car, the cantilever vertical hitch is somewhat of a concern.
