Belleville is and is not downriver :)
Aftermarket hitches are not as heavily constructed as the highly coveted Mopar hitch. Looking at the design, I'd bet doughnuts to dollars that braking is the limitation on the hitch and attachment to the body. I can't explain it and a picture would be nearly impossible to get without disassembling the exhaust and rear fascia, but the hitch is well designed to work with the system.
Mirror vision is a minor problem, but not a major one. I can see the back corner on the trailer, but not what is behind the trailer. I can see reasonably far back in both lanes.
WRT the pin, if it can't take a few hundred pounds of double sheer forces, it most certainly would be survive towing forces.
Just put new tires on the Charger, they are listed as SUV tires with a V speed rating, load range XL.
In terms of spending money, this car isn't going anywhere :) And, the only money I've put into it is the brake controller (and wiring it using the Mopar trailer wiring). I've towed smaller stuff with it before.
F350 Diesel dually might satisfy a few here, including sandman :)
Just the way things are working out, first scheduled trip is a short mostly easy drive on the freeway. Second trip is going to be about 150 miles away. Third trip about 250. Fourth trip would be the UP trip. this will give me plenty of opportunity to put the brakes on (pun intended) and reassess.
Here's a pic of the whole hitch. It's not a light weight affair.
